Auckland’s Precision Prototyping & In-House Manufacturing: journal
journal is based at Victoria Park Market in central Auckland. Alongside industrial design & engineering, the studio operates its own precision manufacturing machines, used to produce timpiece spec metal componentry, coated & branded parts for precision timing products, journal's own unique capability.
Making parts for timepieces demands an extremely high level of accuracy. That standard of craftsmanship & manufacturing execution is applied directly to the design & prototyping work journal does for clients. It is likely the only place in New Zealand, & possibly Australia, where industrial designers manufacture precision engineered parts in-house at this level. That experience shapes everything, from how products are designed to how they are prepared for production.
The studio has contributed to designing & developing many products ranging in industry which hav resulted in businesses receiving recognition in international design awards & being granted international utility & design patents that have been in manufacture for years. That track record comes from understanding not just how to design something, but how to design something that can actually be made well, repeatedly & to a consistent standard.
Prototyping is where this understanding adds particular value. A single prototype requires a completely different approach to mass manufacturing, & getting that gap wrong leads to expensive problems later. journal specialises in producing prototypes that reflect the final manufactured outcome as closely as possible, so that when manufacture begins, the process is smooth & the result is predictable.
A well made prototype also gives clients something real to use before committing to production. Something to present to investors, test with customers, or take to retailers.
